February 15, 2016 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton women's basketball team continued its six-game winning streak with victories over the Cornell Big Red (71-51) and Columbia Lions (86-54) over the weekend at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Here are five takeaways as we look back at “Five Things to Watch Out For” from the Cornell and Columbia weekend.
1. Nia Marshall – The Cornell junior, who came into the weekend's game as the Ivy League's leading scorer (17.8), was held to 3-of-13 shooting (23.1 percent) for seven points, her second lowest total of the season. Over the last three games against Cornell, the Tigers have held Marshall to 32 points on 12-of-42 from the floor (28.5 percent).
2. Cornell ranked last in the Ivy League in three-point defense (33.3 percent) and the Tigers took advantage, going 6-of-13 from long range (46.2 percent). Four different Tigers made a three-pointer including seniors Annie Tarakchian and Amanda Berntsen who were a combined 4-of-4.
3. Columbia came into Saturday's game averaging over 71 points per contest. However, Princeton held the Lions to just 15-of-50 (30 percent) en route to 54 points. In the third quarter, Tigers' defense shut down Columbia's offense, allowing one basket as the Princeton's lead ballooned to 31.
4. Head coach Courtney Banghart's squad outrebounded Cornell, 45-27 and Columbia, 49-29. The Tigers have the fourth highest rebounding margin in the country (+15.5) and average 46.5 rebounds per game, third best in Division I.
5. The Tigers remain unbeaten at home this year and have won 23 consecutive games at Carrill Court. The team's last loss at home was an 80-64 decision to Penn on Mar. 11, 2014.
Before the game vs. Cornell, the team honored senior Alex Wheatley on reaching the 1,000-point milestone. Earlier in the week, Wheatley and senior Michelle Miller sat down to reflect on scoring 1,000 career points in this video.
The Tigers will now hit the road to take on Yale (Feb. 19) and Brown (Feb. 20). Princeton defeated both Ivy foes in January at Jadwin, beating Yale, 65-50 and Brown, 72-53.
