Hampton Tournament Up Next for Softball
February 24, 2016 | Softball
The 2016 season began last weekend in Texas for the Princeton softball team and will continue this weekend in Virginia.
Princeton (2-3) will head to Hampton University to play four games against Buffalo, Hampton and Quinnipiac in the team's final event before a weekend away from competition the first weekend of March.
Princeton faced South Dakota State three times, winning twice, and UT Arlington, which will enter this weekend at 10-0 on the season, falling in both games to the Mavericks. All six rookies played over the first weekend and one, Mikayla Blaska, found her way to the team's top batting average and hit total by getting five hits in her six at-bats. Another freshman, Kaylee Grant, had the team's only home run of the first weekend.
In the circle, all five pitchers saw time, with senior Shanna Christian throwing a team-high 12 1/3 innings. She and sophomore Ashley La Guardia had Princeton's wins in the circle on the first weekend.
All four teams in the Hampton event have played one tournament so far. Buffalo took one of five at a Southeastern Louisiana-hosted event two weekends ago, while Hampton took three out of four from Hartford and host Gardner-Webb last weekend, and Quinnipiac took one of four last weekend at an Illinois-Chicago event.
