Wheatley Scores Third Career Ivy Weekly Accolade
February 29, 2016 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Alex Wheatley of the Princeton women's basketball team has been named as the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week. She is the fourth Tiger to win the weekly honor this season. A Princeton player has laid claim to the league's Player of the Week award in 21 of the last 28 weeks that the team has been eligible.
It's Wheatley's third career POTW award and second this season. She began her weekend with a 10-point outing on 5-of-7 shooting in the Tigers' 29-point victory over Columbia on Friday. The forward also added two rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in the win.
The senior was even better on Saturday at Cornell. The tri-captain went 11-of-14 (78.6 percent), setting a new career-high with 23 points. Even more impressive is the fact Wheatley scored 23 points in just 19 minutes of play. Her 11 field goals made is also a personal best. The senior had five rebounds as the Tigers picked up their 21st win of the season. For the weekend, Wheatley went 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) in only 37 minutes of action and averaged 16.5 points per game.
The Tigers are on a ten-game winning streak and currently sit at 21-4 overall and 10-1 in the Ivy League. Princeton is tied at the top of the Ivy League standings with the Penn Quakers. Head coach Courtney Banghart's squad will take on the Harvard Crimson (Mar. 4) and Dartmouth Big Green (Mar. 5) at the Jadwin Gymnasium.
