Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. – A three-run eighth inning would give the Old Dominion Monarchs a 7-6 victory over the Princeton baseball team at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening.
Every starter for the Tigers recorded a base knock with freshmen Joseph Flynn and senior Andrew Christie's two hits each leading the team. Sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson scored twice while senior Danny Hoy added two RBI.
The home team jumped over Princeton early with four runs in its first at-bat. Two errors by Tigers would lead to two unearned runs for the Monarchs. Flynn, who began the contest on the mound, settled down in his next two innings of work, not allowing a hit.
Princeton got its first run of the game in the next half inning on a two-out RBI hit by junior Paul Tupper. The road squad registered another tally in the fifth inning on a single by senior Billy Arendt. With one out and Lee-Tyson on first base after a fielders' choice, junior Danny Baer had a bunt single. On the play, Lee-Tyson moved to third base on an error. The sophomore would touch home one batter later on Arendt's hit.
The Tigers' big rally came in the seventh inning. Following back-to-back singles, Baer advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. Arendt walked to load the bases before Hoy came through, ripping a two-run single to left field to tie the game at four. Junior Zack Belski kept the offense rolling with a RBI double, giving Princeton a 5-4 advantage. A fielders' choice gave the Ivy League team its sixth run.
Old Dominion would not go away as its three runs in the eighth proving to be the difference in the game. An error and passed ball squared the non-conference tilt at 6-all. A Chris Livers' run-scoring single put the Monarchs in front for good. Old Dominion had another potential run thrown out at the plate in the frame. The Tigers went down in order in their last at-bat, giving the Monarchs nabbed the come-from-behind win.
These two teams will get right back at it tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Freshmen Tanner Kliewer will make his second appearance and first career collegiate start for the Tigers while Victor Diaz takes the hill for the Monarchs.
