Big Comeback In Game 1 Sparks Princeton To Sweep Of Georgetown
March 18, 2016 | Baseball
BETHESDA, Md. – The Princeton baseball team came from behind in Game 1 and played from ahead in Game 2. Both formulas worked for the Tigers, who came away with a sweep of Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field Friday, rallying to take the opener 7-3 and then holding off the Hoyas 8-4 in the nightcap.
The doubleheader came about due to weather concerns for Sunday, so the teams decided to play two games Friday and one Saturday, rather than one each day for the three days.
Princeton trailed 3-0 as it headed into the ninth in the first game, but the Tigers would tie it on a Paul Tupper three-run home run and then win it with four runs in the 10th.
Georgetown's Jake Kuzel got the scoring started on a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. After that, Princeton starting pitcher, senior Luke Strieber, scattered just four hits over his next five innings of work.
The Tigers had runners in scoring position in the second and and third innings, but couldn't push across a run. Princeton again put runners on in the sixth and seventh, but the Hoyas kept the Tigers off the scoreboard. Georgetown registered another insurance tally in its half of the seventh frame.
Trailing by three and down to its last at-bat, the Tigers began the ninth with a single and walk. Two straight strikeouts had Princeton down to its last out before Tupper lifted a home run to left field to tie the game.
Princeton's big 10th inning began just like the ninth with a single and walk. After a ground out, Flynn was intentionally walked to load the bases. Senior Billy Arendt scored the first run on a wild pitch while senior Danny Hoy touched home on a RBI single by sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson. Flynn eventually scored on a passed ball and junior Zack Belski's RBI double provided the Tigers with its seventh run of the game. Junior Chris Giglio went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to clinch the victory.
Game 2 had the opposite script, as Princeton used a five-run seventh to open a 7-0 lead. Georgetown scored four of its own in the bottom of the inning, but the Tigers tacked on another run in the eighth.
Cameron Mingo pitched into the seventh for the win after holding Georgetown scoreless for the first six innings.
Princeton had seven hits in the game, all of which were singles. The Tigers also took advantage of 10 Georgetown walks.
Princeton shortstop Asher Lee-Tyson drove in three runs out of the lead-off spot. Tupper scored twice and drove in a run in the second game.
