Stone, Liu Take NCAA Individual Runner-Up as Tigers Stand Third
March 25, 2016 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Princeton ended the women's competition at the NCAA fencing championships at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., in the same place where it stood following Thursday's first day of bouts, but the gap between the Tigers and the top has become much smaller.
Columbia ended Friday with 86 wins, two more than Notre Dame and four more than Princeton.
When competition ended Thursday, Princeton was 11 wins back of leader Columbia, which had a 10-win lead over second-place Notre Dame.
Princeton advanced senior saber Gracie Stone and freshman épée Charlene Liu into the individual competition, where both won semifinal bouts before falling in their respective finals. Liu was a 13-8 winner over Ohio State's Eugenia Falqui, but Penn State's Jessie Gottesman-Radanovich defeated her 15-10 in the final. Stone defeated St. John's' Mathilda Taharo 15-8 in her semifinal before Harvard's Adrienne Jarocki won the saber title 15-10. While it was the first NCAA individual bracket appearance for Liu, it was Stone's third and first finals berth. Stone fell in the semifinals in 2013 and 2014.
With their top-12 finishes, Stone, Liu, junior Ashley Tsue (ninth in foil) and senior Isabel Ford (11th in épée) clinched All-America honors. It's the fourth All-America recognition for Stone, who joins her sister Eliza Stone '13 as the only Princeton sabers to win four All-America honors. The recognition is the second each for Tsue and Ford, and the first for the rookie Liu.
The men's portion of the competition will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and live results can be found here.
