Third-Ranked Heavyweights Top Georgetown In Impressive Season Opener
March 26, 2016 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Tigers went 3-for-3 in the actual competition, including their 1V victory over the Hoyas. With only variable headwinds in an otherwise pleasant March morning, the Tigers completed the Lake Carnegie course in 6:05.0, while Georgetown took second in 6:26.0.
"It's early season so we were just focused on controlling the things we could, while giving it a bit of cheddar," senior Ed Northrop said. "It's always rewarding to come out of the winter and have the chance to bang heads, side-by-each, with another team. The morning was also really consistent, which is promising this early on in the season."
While the varsity eight will be trying to complete its first championship season since 2006, a major strength of the program recently has been the speed over the top three boats, and that was the case again Saturday. The 2V, coming off back-to-back medals at the IRA Championships, won its race by 25 seconds (6:18.0), while the 3V took a win by 37 seconds (6:17.0).
Princeton clearly handled their home conditions well, but they won't have another Saturday opportunity to do so again until the final weekend in April. The Tigers will be on the road over the next four weeks, including a showdown for the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup next weekend in Annapolis.
"It's a daunting task, but it's always nice to be able to go into someone's backyard and plant a few daisies," Northrop said. "We have a really deep and experienced team, so I think we're going to be able to handle this challenge head-on. Given that Sprints and IRAs are away it's really good preparation for when it matters the most. The focus for April will be on going fast. Which is also the focus for May, coincidentally."
