GOUDA, Netherlands – Ashleigh Johnson, senior-in-waiting, for the Princeton women's water polo team recorded five saves as the USA Water Polo National Team won 19-0 over France in the Olympic Qualification Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday morning. With the victory, USA qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The game will be replayed on the NBC Sports Network today at 4:30 p.m.
The women's national team has outscored its opponent by an average of 12.8 goals in the tournament's six games. USA will take on the winner of the Spain and the Netherlands tomorrow. The national team has not lost in 2016, winning 17 consecutive matches dating back to last year.
It's been a remarkable year for Johnson as she was recently named an AAU Sullivan Award semifinalist. Last summer, the senior-in-waiting was named the 2015 WaterPoloWorld Female Player of the Year after helping the senior women's water polo team win the FINA World Championship. She was named the championship match MVP and tournament's top goalkeeper.
The reigning CWPA Player of the Year, Johnson has posted an 81-13 overall mark, turning away 1,062 of the 1,533 shots she has faced en route to a 0.693 save percentage for Princeton. Putting together three of the highest single-season save totals in program history, Johnson is already the Tigers' career leader with 1,062 stops.
