ALBANY, N.Y. (3/4/16) - The Princeton women's hockey team has earned Rookie of the Year, Defender of the Year and Coach of the Year honors it was announced at the annual ECAC Hockey women's banquet this evening.
Karlie Lund was named the league's Rookie of the Year. She was also a finalist for Best Forward of the Year. Lund was named to both the first-team and the all-rookie team. Lund is the third Tiger to earn the league's Rookie of the Year honor, joining Gina Pietrangelo '87 and Annie Greenwood '09. Lund made an immediate impact in the league, becoming the first freshman to lead the league in scoring since Cornell's Brianne Jenner topped all scorers in the 2010-11 season. She was recognized for her prolific performances throughout the season earning Rookie of the Month three times; Rookie of the Week five times; and Player of the Week on one occasion. In overall contests the Eden Prairie, Minn., native registered 39 points, leading the Tigers and ranking second nationally among her rookie counterparts at 1.32 points per game. She has tallied five game-winning goals, two game-tying goals and four power-play goals. Earning a +18 on-ice rating, she has won 63.5 percent of her face-offs.
Kelsey Koelzer earned the league's Best Defender of the Year honor, while also being a finalist for Player of the Year. She also captured first-team all-league honors. Only one other Tiger has been named the Defender of the Year and that was two-time recipient Katherine Dineen '09 in 2008 and 2009. Koelzer was a second-team All-ECAC selection a year ago. A two-time Player of the Week honoree this season, Koelzer has sparked the Tigers at both ends of the ice. She anchored both the teams' power-play and penalty-killing units. The gifted defender ranked first in scoring among her counterparts in league-play averaging 1.05 points per game on 23 points on 11 goals and 12 assists, while amassing 32 points overall on 17 goals and 15 assists as the nation's fourth-highest scoring defender. The Horsham, Pa., native was also second in the conference in game-winner goals, registering four. On the defensive end of the ice, Koelzer recorded 60 blocks, averaging 1.88 per game, ranking fifth in the league in blocks per game. She was a top-10 finalist for the 2016 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award.
Lund and Koelzer are the first players to earn first team honors since 2009, which was also the last time Princeton won one of the league's major awards.
Joining Lund on the all-rookie team was defender Stephanie Sucharda. They are the first pair to make the all-rookie team since All-America Sasha Sherry '11 and Laura Martindale '11 in 2008. The Mississauga, Ontario native was the second-highest scoring defender and freshman for the Tigers. She tallied 17 points on three goals and 14 assists. Sucharda was a +9 and blocked 45 shots.
Kampersal earns his fourth ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year award, having earned the nod in 2002, 2006 and 2008. Also this year's Ivy League Coach of the Year, Kampersal led the team to a 22-8-2 overall record with the most wins in program history. It marked the fourth time he and the Tigers reached the 20-win plateau. He recorded his 300th career victory at Rensselaer on Jan. 9, and put at No. 8 in the national poll, its highest ranking in the last decade.
