Men's Tennis Downs No. 24 Penn State to Finish Weekend Sweep
March 05, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Despite a loss to then-unranked Alabama at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic last weekend, the Princeton men's tennis team jumped 14 spots in the ITA rankings to No. 38.
Saturday, the Tigers proved the rise in rankings was no fluke. A day after defeating 58th-ranked Indiana, Princeton took down No. 24 Penn State by the same score, 6-1, to complete the weekend sweep in Jadwin Gym.
Penn State is the second-highest ranked team the Tigers have defeated in Billy Pate's four years as coach, behind only then-No. 22 Harvard a year ago in San Diego. Princeton will head back to that tournament, the USD Challenge, in two weeks.
Though Princeton now leads the all-time series with Penn State 21-8, the Nittany Lions had control of late against the Tigers, winning the last three since Princeton's last victory in the series in 2011.
Princeton got the win Saturday by bouncing back from a doubles-point loss decided in a tiebreak, taking all six singles matches with wins by Alex Day, Diego Vives and Luke Gamble coming in straight sets. Vives' win came over the nation's 59th-ranked player, Leonard Stakhovsky, while Tom Colautti beat No. 98 Matt Barry in a third-set tiebreak.
The win was the first for Vives over an ITA-ranked player after four opportunities, and Colautti's was his first of the season after winning three such matches last year.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "It is very rare to lose a doubles point and come back to win all six singles againast a team the caliber of Penn State. We actually played pretty well in doubles and simply fell on the short end, so in a way it gave us a better sense of urgency. The team showed me a lot today in terms of their grittiness and perseverance. This was a significant win and a great weekend for us. We now have a few days off for the guys to get through midterms before embarking on spring break and another set of very challenging matches before Ivy League play begins. I really like where we are right now as a team, but it's vital we keep our foot on the gas pedal and remain focused for the challenges ahead." |
