April 17, 2016 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton baseball team worked a split against the Penn Quakers on Sunday afternoon, taking game one, 5-1 and dropping game two, 5-2 at Clarke Field. The Tigers finished with a series victory, going 3-1 against the Quakers.
Princeton 5, Penn 1 - Box Score
Freshman Jesper Horsted and senior Billy Arendt had two hits each to pace the Tigers' offense. Junior Keelan Smithers pitched six innings, scattering six hits and giving up just one earned run. Senior Danny Thomson went 1-2-3 in the seventh to finish off the Quakers.
After sending down Penn in order in the first inning, Smithers put the first two runners on base in the second. Following a failed bunt attempt, the junior got a 5-4-3 double play to work around the jam. The Quakers loaded the bases in the third with one out, but again Smithers threw a double play ball to escape further trouble.
Princeton's first scoring threat came in the third inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, but a fly out and fielder's choice put an end to the frame.
The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard on a passed ball in the fourth. After being held hitless yesterday, the Ivy League's leading hitter, Penn's Gary Tesch, ripped his second base hit in the right-center gap to tie the contest at 1-all in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Arendt and Hoy led off with singles and then moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from junior Nick Hernandez. One batter after the junior, Flynn laced a ground-rule double to right center that plated two. Junior Paul Tupper added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Arendt's streak of 10 consecutive plate appearances of reaching base came to a close in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Thomson struck out two in the Quakers' final at-bat to wrap up the victory.
Penn 5, Princeton 2 - Box Score
Junior Zack Belski was the only Tiger to secure a multi-hit game with two knocks. Flynn threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two in the loss.
The home team started the scoring in game two in its second at-bat. Hernandez began the frame with a walk and moved up on a single by Belski. Flynn continued the hit train with a double down the left field line which let Hernandez race to the plate. Princeton couldn't tack on more runs despite having runners on second and third with no one out.
A two-run home run by Penn's Tim Graul gave the Quakers their first lead of the weekend in the third. An error provided the Tigers with an unearned run to tie the game at 2-all in their half of the inning.
Flynn moved to the mound and retired the first 10 hitters he faced to roll through the fourth through sixth frames. The Quakers had a scoring chance in the seventh, placing a runner on third, however Hoy made a running catch in foul territory and then threw a Quaker out at the plate to terminate the opportunity.
The Quakers cashed in the eighth on a two-run home run by Ryan Mincher to go up 4-2. Princeton had a runner in scoring position in the eighth, but couldn't bring him home. Penn scored another run in the ninth and then had its closer, Jake Nelson, pitch a clean inning to salvage a win in the series.
Princeton will wrap up non-conference action on Wednesday against in-state rival, Rider, at 3:30 p.m. Next weekend, the Tigers will travel to New York to continue Gehrig Division play against Columbia.
