Cornell Rallies to Top Men's Tennis

Princeton won the doubles point and was two games away from closing out a win over No. 55 Cornell Sunday afternoon at the Lenz Tennis Center, but the Big Red's Bernardo Casares Rosa rallied to clinch a 4-3 win for Cornell.
The afternoon started well for the Tigers, who had a win from 86th-ranked Alex Day and Luke Gamble over 66th-ranked Colin Sinclair and David Volfson on court one to even the doubles point before Tom Colautti and Josh Yablon won on court three to put the Tigers up 1-0.
After the doubles point, Princeton got a win on court five from Gamble to take a 2-0 lead before Cornell won the next two singles matches to end. The Tigers went back in front 3-2 when Jimmy Wasserman prevailed on court six, but a Big Red win on court three put all the focus on the match between Casares Rosa and Yablon on court four. Yablon was serving, up 4-1, but Casares Rosa won five straight games to save the match for the Big Red.
Princeton will wrap its regular season next Saturday at Penn at 1 p.m.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "This was another close match that we just didn't turn the corner to get the fourth point. Unfortunately, I'm afraid this loss puts us in a tough position as far as NCAA selections. Cornell battled the whole way and just hung in there. As a team, we didn't put them away and it came back to bite us in the end. As it relates to this season, we're incredibly disappointed as we had a great start to this year by securing several national-level wins against ranked teams. We simly faltered in close matches down the stretch and it's clearly not up to the standard of the goals we set for our program. We'll get back to work to finish on a positive note against Penn." |
