PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton will travel to Columbia this weekend for a four-game set in New York. The Tigers lead the Gehrig Division of the Ivy League by three games over Cornell and Penn. Columbia trails Princeton by four games. The first game of the weekend will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
- Behind three hits and a home run from junior Nick Hernandez, the Tigers defeated the Rider Broncs, 7-2 at Sonny Pittaro Field on Wednesday.
- Hernandez, freshman Jesper Horsted and senior Andrew Christie had three hits in the game.
- Freshman Tanner Kliewer went five innings, giving up two hits in what was his first collegiate victory.
- Princeton took three of four from the Penn Quakers to extend its Gehrig Division lead last weekend.
- In a 7-2 victory in game one over the Quakers, senior Billy Arendt was perfect at the plate, registering three hits including a three-run home run and two runs. Freshman Joseph Flynn was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
- Senior Cameron Mingo picked up his fifth win of the season, allowing just two earned runs in four innings. Sophomore Nick Brady struck out two over the final three frames to nab the save for the Tigers.
- Behind a stellar pitching performance from junior Chad Powers, the Tigers took down Penn, 3-1 in game two.
- Powers went eight innings and struck out six in the victory.
- Arendt continued his hot streak as he was not retired in four plate appearances. In fact, the senior third baseman got on base every time he came to bat on Saturday. Senior Danny Hoy and junior Zack Belski had multi-hit outings in the contest.
- During a 5-1 win in game three against the Quakers, Horsted and Arendt had two hits each to pace the Tigers' offense. Junior Keelan Smithers pitched six innings, scattering six hits and giving up just one earned run. Senior Danny Thomson went 1-2-3 in the seventh to finish off the Quakers.
- The Quakers salvaged a win in the series with a 5-2 decision in game four.
- Belski was the only Tiger to secure a multi-hit game with two knocks. Flynn threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two in the loss.
ON A ROLL
- Arendt had an outstanding weekend vs. Penn. He went 7-of-10 and had a .733 on-base percentage and slugged 1.300. He reached base in 10 straight plate appearances at one point. With his stellar performance, the senior was selected as the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week.
- Belski hit .455 while Flynn secured a .417 batting average against the Quakers.
- Arendt and Hoy hit home runs for Princeton in the team's four-game series vs. Penn.
- Powers, with outing vs. Penn, was honored as the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week.
ON THE HILL
- Mingo's five wins is tied for the Ivy League lead.
- The pitching staff's 3.86 ERA is second in the conference.
- Every starter that has made at least five starts has an ERA of 3.79 or lower.
- Powers has the lowest ERA among the Tigers' pitching staff at 2.56 in 45 2/3 innings.
- Six different players have an ERA under 4.00.
- The Tigers' pitching staff has thrown five complete games.
- Senior Luke Strieber and Mingo lead the team with 22 strikeouts.
- Eight different Tigers have at least 10 strikeouts.
BATTING AROUND
- Horsted's .337 average is fifth in the Ivy League. The freshman is currently on a 11-game hitting streak and 15-game on-base steak.
- Hoy ranks in the Ivy League's top ten in runs (first), hits (fourth), total bases (fourth), steals (fourth), home runs (seventh) and average (nine).
- Arendt has raised his batting average 64 points in the month of April and is tied for seventh in the conference in home runs.
- Hernandez is tied for the conference lead in RBI (23) while Belski (22) is tied for fourth.
- Princeton has four starters that are hitting at least .271.
SCOUTING COLUMBIA
- The Lions are 10-22 on the season and 4-8 in the Ivy League.
- Will Savage is second among conference foes in batting average (.373). The infielder is in the top five in hits (first), stolen bases (first), on-base percentage (second), walks (fourth) and on-base percentage (fifth).
- Randell Kanemaru leads the team with 20 RBI in just 67 at-bats.
- Thomas Crispi boasts the best ERA among the Lions' pitching staff, having not given up an earned run in 15 innings.
- Harrisen Egly has a team-best three wins and two saves. For the season, he has 2.29 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings.
- Columbia is the three-time Ivy League champion. Last season, the Lions went 34-17 and finished one game shy of the Super Regionals.
