The Wood-Hammond Trophy: Penn and Georgetown

Men's Lightweights Retain Wood-Hammond Cup, Look Ahead To H-Y-P Weekend
April 23, 2016 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Conditions, including a gusting headwind, were challenging on the Princeton home course, but the Tigers were able to take control of the race and handle both the opponents and weather to win by more than 11 seconds. Princeton won the varsity eight in 6:24.3, while Penn had a significant advantage on Georgetown for third.
That would be the story throughout the regatta, as Princeton posted strong margins over Penn for the wins, while the Quakers topped Georgetown for second position. The Tiger 2V (6:43.7) won by about 10 seconds over Penn, with the 3V (6:46.4) improved that margin to nearly 16 seconds.
The depth of Princeton's lightweight program, considered one of its biggest strengths by head coach Marty Crotty, was on full display in the fourth varsity race. The Tigers sent out a 4V, a 5V and a 6V, and each of the trio was able to defeat both the Penn and Georgetown 4V.
Princeton has one regular season weekend remaining, and it knows it's a big one. Both No. 1 Yale and No. 5 Harvard will head to Lake Carnegie for the Goldthwait and Vogel Cups next Saturday morning; Yale is the lone unbeaten boat in the sport, while Princeton will enter having won each of the last two Goldthwait Cups.
All races will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
