PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team will wrap up the 2016 regular season with a four-game series against the Cornell Big Red on Friday (Apr. 29) and Saturday (Apr. 30). The two Ivy League foes will battle in a doubleheader at Hoy Field in Ithaca, N.Y., on Friday before a doubleheader at Clarke Field on Saturday.
The Tigers lead the Gehrig Division of the Ivy League by one game over the Penn Quakers. Columbia is three games back while Cornell will need a four-game sweep to pull even with Princeton.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
- The Tigers dropped three out of four to the Columbia Lions last weekend.
- In game one, the Lions picked up an 8-4 decision. Senior Danny Hoy had his sixth multi-RBI game of the season as he knocked in three Tigers and snagged three hits.
- During game two, Princeton scored its only win of the series with a 6-2 victory. Freshman Jesper Horsted's four hits highlighted Princeton's offense. Senior Billy Arendt and junior Nick Hernandez also had multi-hit outings in the win. Junior Chad Powers went all nine innings, scattering just three hits.
- Between the third through fifth innings, Powers allowed just one infield single. That runner was quickly erased on a caught stealing. The Lions had a hit in the sixth, but couldn't put together a rally. The starter got another clean frame in the seventh and eighth innings, but lost his shutout bid in the ninth.
- Despite scoring two runs in its last at-bat, Princeton fell 5-4 to Columbia in game three on Sunday.
- With a runner on second base and down to its last out in game four, the Tigers tied the game as Hernandez sliced a ball down the left field line that got Horsted home. However, Columbia won 8-7 on a walk-off infield single.
ON A ROLL
- Hoy went 8-of-16 in the Columbia series, scoring five runs and knocking in five RBI. He finished with 14 total bases, a .875 slugging percentage and .556 on-base percentage.
- Sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson hit .364 (4-of-11) against Columbia, second best on the team.
- Junior Chris Giglio threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against the Lions.
ON THE HILL
- Powers boast the team's ERA among qualified pitchers at 2.14. The junior is 4-3 on the season with two complete games and one shutout.
- The pitching staff has the second lowest ERA in the Ivy League (4.02).
- Four different Tigers have an ERA under 4.00.
- Senior Luke Strieber and Powers have a team-best 25 strikeouts.
- Eight different Tigers have at least 10 strikeouts.
BATTING AROUND
- Horsted's .340 batting average is fifth in the Ivy League. He had a 17-game on-base streak recently end at Columbia.
- Hoy ranks in the Ivy League's top ten in runs (first), total bases (second), hits (fourth), stolen bases (fourth), home runs (fourth), slugging percentage (fourth), on-base percentage (ninth) and RBI (10th).
- Arendt has raised his batting average 64 points in the month of April and is tied for 10th in the conference in home runs.
- Hernandez (28) is second in the Ivy League in RBI while junior Zack Belski is tied for fifth with 24.
- Five starters for Princeton are hitting at least .267.
SCOUTING CORNELL

- Cornell is 13-19 overall and 6-10 in the Ivy League.
- The Big Red has scored victories over Northeastern, Wofford, Bucknell, Harvard, Binghamton, Columbia and Penn.
- Tommy Wagner has the team's best batting average at .358. His slash line for the season is .358/.447/.494.
- Cole Rutherford's six home runs is tied for second in the Ivy League while his 24 RBI are tied for fifth.
