The magic number for the Princeton softball team is two.
Princeton will play Cornell Friday in Ithaca and Saturday in Princeton and Penn will play Columbia Friday in New York and Saturday in Philadelphia. The only teams mathematically alive for the Ivy South title are Princeton and Penn, with Princeton holding a three-game lead. Any Princeton win or Penn loss will count as one game in whittling that magic number down to zero.
All the doubleheaders will start at 1:30 p.m.
If the Tigers get there, they'll get the chance to play in the Ivy League Championship Series, which will start May 7, for the first time since 2008, when Princeton defeated Harvard and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
The Ivy North winner has clinched the right to host the ILCS, since Dartmouth (14-2 Ivy) and Harvard (13-3 Ivy) will play each other four times this weekend and the winner will have a better Ivy record than either Princeton or Penn. Those doubleheaders will be Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. both days, first at Harvard.
In addition to potentially being an Ivy division clincher, Sunday's doubleheader will also serve as senior day, with Princeton's six seniors - Danielle Allen, Kayla Bose, Shanna Christian, Skye Jerpbak, Kate Miller and Emily Viggers - getting set for their final games at the Class of 1895 Field.
The Tigers have acheived their division-leading status by winning each of their first two Ivy South series, taking three of four each from Penn and Columbia. Princeton last won a series from Cornell in 2013, and Princeton last won all three series against Ivy South opponents in 2008.
