Princeton Beats Harvard, 12-8; Advances to CWPA Semifinals
April 29, 2016 | Women's Water Polo
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 17 Princeton women's water polo team advanced to the semifinals of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship with a 12-8 victory over the No. 18 Harvard Crimson at Blodgett Pool on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Haley Wan scored a hat trick to lead the Tigers' offense. Freshmen Eliza Britt, Lindsey Kelleher and sophomore Chelsea Johnson had multi-goal outings while sophomore Helena van Brande had 10 saves in the win.
The two Ivy League foes had an evenly played first quarter as they combined for five goals in the first eight minutes. Harvard took two leads at 1-0 and 2-1, but Princeton quickly answered each time. Senior Pippa Temple's tally with 33 seconds to go gave head coach Luis Nicolao's squad a 3-2 advantage after the first frame.
Harvard scored twice in a 43-second span of the second quarter to tie the contest at 4-all, but Princeton countered with the last two goals of the half to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.
The Tigers started to pull away with three straight tallies in the third to set the score at 9-4. Harvard would get within three as the clock ticked under four minutes to go in the game, but Princeton pitched a shutout the rest of the way to move on to the CWPA semifinals.
Princeton will take on No. 1 seeded Michigan tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Tigers are the defending CWPA champions and have won three of the last four titles.
