Top-Ranked Yale Claims Goldthwait Cup In Tightly Contested Lightweight Dual
April 30, 2016 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The 2016 edition, held on Lake Carnegie, also served as Senior Day for the Princeton lightweights. The Tigers won two races on the day, including a 3V win by 4.8 seconds that clinched a perfect season for that boat.
By winning the two races worth the most points (1V, 2V), Yale also won the Vogel Cup for the team points title.
The highlight race of the day came in the varsity eight, where Yale was able to hold off Princeton's upset charge to win in 5:48.6 on ideal racing conditions. Princeton topped Harvard by more than three seconds for second place.
That was almost an exact replica of the 2V finish, as Yale won by just under two seconds (5:55.1-5:57.0), while Princeton topped Harvard by just under four seconds.
The Princeton 3V had the biggest margin of victory during the regatta, and even that wasn't a full five seconds (4.8). The 4V won by 4.6 seconds, while the Harvard 5V won by 3.5 seconds.
Following the races, Princeton also honored its largest senior class in program history: Cam Howie, Isaiah Brown, Jason Yu, Trip Henningsen, Suraj Bhat, Devon Varrichione, Derek Xu, Christian Wawrzonek, Ilana Polster, Jack Jablonski, George Jian, Mac Singer, Sam Jordan, and James Agolia.
