PRINCETON, N.J. – The Monmouth Hawks netted runs in the final four innings en route to a 7-3 victory over the Princeton baseball team at Clarke Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Danny Hoy and sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson had two hits each. The senior second baseman has an eight-game on-base streak. Senior Chris Bodurian did not give up earned run and struck out three.
Hoy's hustle led to the Tigers' first run in their half of the first inning. The senior hit a routine ground ball up the middle and turned it into a double as the Monmouth center fielder took too long to get the ball into the infield. Princeton used that to its advantage as junior Nick Hernandez ripped a ball down the left field line that allowed Hoy to touch home. With the hit, Hernandez extended his hitting streak to five. Princeton would load the bases with one out, but the Hawks' starting pitcher Tyler Ksiazek got a strikeout and fielders' choice conclude the rally.
An error by Princeton in the second inning tied the non-conference contest at 1-all. The visitors added another tally on a RBI bloop single by Christian Holland to go in front, 2-1 in the fourth frame. Junior Paul Tupper started the Tigers' fourth at-bat with a single. Junior Chad Powers reached second on a throwing error that also moved Tupper to third. A junior Cody Phillips' sacrifice fly retied the game at 2-all several batters later.
In the sixth, a wild pitch had the Hawks try to advance Cary Jacobson home from second base, but Christie threw him out at the plate. Two hitters later with runners on the corners, Holland stole second while Chris Gaetano scooted home on the throw to put the Hawks ahead, 3-2. The road team put together a run in the seventh inning on a throwing error.
Following a fly out to begin the eighth inning, a double and single gave the Hawks base runners on first and third. Monmouth's Robbie Alessandrine tried a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error put Alessandrine on second base and would increase the Hawks' run total. A sacrifice fly set the score at 6-2. Monmouth collected an extra run on a Danny Shea RBI double in the ninth inning. Hoy posted a run-scoring single in the last half of the ninth to wrap up the scoring.
Princeton's five-game winning streak came to an end as Monmouth won its second straight over the Tigers. The baseball team will get back into Ivy League play with a doubleheader at Yale on Saturday. The first game is a seven-inning contest while the second is a nine-inning event. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
