Women's Water Polo Finishes 2016 Season With Win Over Hartwick, 17-10
May 01, 2016 | Women's Water Polo
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 17 Princeton women's water polo team defeated the No. 21 Hartwick College Hawks, 17-10, in the third place game at the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) Championship on Sunday afternoon.
With the conclusion of the game, the career of Pippa Temple came to an end. Temple was named to the All-CWPA second team this season for the first time. She was part of two CWPA Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013 and 2015. The Tigers went 109-20 in Temple's time at Princeton.
Temple's final collegiate contest was a stellar one as she scored three goals and tacked on an assist. Sophomore Haley Wan (three goals, three assists) and freshman Lindsey Kelleher (two goals, four assists) had six-point outings while six other Tigers scored in the win.
Princeton's offense started off fast, scoring four of the first five goals of the game, highlighted by Wan's two tallies. The Tigers held a 5-2 lead before the Hawks got one back with five seconds to go in the first quarter.
The Tigers continued to put pressure on the Hawks with the first three goals of the second frame to take an 8-3 lead with 4:26 left. The two teams would exchange tallies before a goal from sophomore Emily Smith with six seconds remaining made the halftime score, 10-4, in favor of the Tigers.
The two teams exchanged rallies to begin the second half before a power play goal by the Hawks would make the score, 12-8 as the clock ticked under three minutes in the third stanza. Two consecutive goals for Princeton to finish the quarter would give it a six-goal lead that Hartwick could not recover from.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Wan, Temple and sophomore Chelsea Johnson were named to the CWPA All-Tournament second team.
