PRINCETON, N.J. – The Yale Bulldogs pulled out two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take game one of the Ivy League Championship Series, 8-7, at Clarke Field on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Jesper Horsted contributed two hits and two RBI from the top of the Princeton order. Sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson had three RBI and added two hits. Freshman Joseph Flynn also registered a multi-hit outing. Senior Luke Strieber allowed just two runs over six relief innings in the loss.
In the second inning with one out, Yale began a scoring chance with a single and walk. Junior Keelan Smithers tried to work around the rally with a strikeout, but allowed a two-run single to Andrew Herrera. A few batters later, the Bulldogs looked to tack on with a runner on second, but senior second baseman Danny Hoy made a diving play to his left, got up, and then threw out Nate Adams at first to end the frame.
The Tigers got their first player in scoring position in the bottom of the second with two out as junior Danny Baer moved to third on a two-base error by Yale pitcher Scott Politz. After just missing a double down the right field line by a few feet, senior Andrew Christie snuck a ball by the third baseman to allow Baer to touch home. Two hitters later, Horsted bounced a ball over the first baseman's head that scored Christie to tie the game at 2-all.
In the third, Yale loaded the bases with three walks. The Bulldogs' Alec Hoeschel and Herrera came through with back-to-back two-run singles to put the road team in front, 6-2.
Hoy began the home half of the third by dropping a ball in the outfield that fell between the shortstop, second baseman and center fielder. The senior would give the Tigers their third run later in the frame on a RBI groundout by junior Zack Belski.
Horsted end the top of the fourth in thrilling fashion. The left fielder made a running catch in foul territory and then threw out the runner trying to score.
A double by Belski in the sixth ended a streak of 10-in-a-row retired by Politz. Flynn socked a base hit to left field and then was followed by Baer being hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases with one out. Politz got a strikeout, but then gave up a two-run base hit to Lee-Tyson to make the score, 6-5. On the play, Baer was tagged out at third base to end the inning, but not before Flynn crossed the plate.
Behind five consecutive walks, Princeton took a 7-6 advantage in the eighth. Despite giving up the lead, Yale fought back in its last at-bat. With one out, a walk and single set runners at the corners for Richard Slenker. Following a swipe of second base, Slenker laced a base hit to right field that put the Bulldogs in the lead, 8-7.
Yale's Eric Brodkowitz threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Ivy League Championship Series. Game two of the series will be tomorrow at Clarke Field beginning at 12 p.m. Should the Tigers win the second contest, game three will take place 30 minutes after.
