Open Rowing Earns Strong Seeding For 20th Straight NCAA Championship
May 18, 2016 | Women's Rowing - Open
PRINCETON WINS IVY TITLE l LORI DAUPHINY NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
The Ivy League champion Princeton open rowing team is one of only three programs to have qualified for all 20 NCAA Championship regattas, and it will bring both momentum and strong seedings to the 2016 Championships May 27-29 at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif.
Two days after knocking off Brown, the top-ranked team in the nation, to win its fourth Ivy League title in six years, the Princeton varsity eight will be seeded fourth in the 22-boat field of 1V crews. The two other Tiger boats, the 2V and the V4, will both be seeded sixth after silver-medal performances at Ivies.
Unlike the Ivy League title, the NCAA championship is awarded to the program with the best combined score of its three boats. The V8 is worth the most points, followed by the 2V and the V4, and Princeton has finished in the top six in five of the last six years. The Tigers have also won three individual gold medals in program history (1997 2V, 2006 1V, 2011 1V).
The varsity eight went 9-2 on the season, though it won its final nine races and then the Ivy League championship. It avenged one of its opening losses when it defeated Brown to win the Ivy title; the other loss came by .3 of a second to reigning NCAA champion Ohio State. The 2V went 8-3, while the V4 also went 8-3.
Princeton head coach Lori Dauphiny, who has been at the helm for all 20 appearances at the NCAA Championships, was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year prior to the NCAA Championships announcement.
