EUGENE, Ore. (7/2/16) - Three former Princeton Tigers competed on Day 2 of the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials this afternoon at Historic Hayward Field.
The first event of the day saw recent graduate Adam Bragg '16 make his first Olympic trial debut. Twenty-eighth athletes competed in this "qualifying round" with the top 12 moving on to tomorrow's final. The opening height was set at 5.40 (17-8.5) and Bragg easily cleared it on his first attempt. He would be able to get over the bar at 5.50 (18-0.5) on his three attempts and finished in heartbreaking fashion would be the first one out of making the finals. Notably 10 pole vaulters no heighted in the trials.
The first women's track event of the day and saw the longest distance take to the track, the 10k for the first final. Princeton alum Liz Costello '10 racing with New Balance/New Balance Boston, was in the front pack nearly the entire race. Midway though the race there was a 13-person pack with favorite Molly Huddle leading nearly the entire race. With four laps remaining three broke out in front: Huddle (Saucony/Notre Dame '06) of Saucony 31:41.62, followed by Emily Infeld (Nike BTC/Georgetown '12) and Marielle Hall strides back at (Nike/Texas '14) 31:54.77.
Costello closed well and took sixth at 32:31.81. She entered the race ranked sixth though just one second out of first place, and would finish with that placement as well.
Only two US women's have won medals in the 10k in the Olympics: Princeton's Lynn Jennings in 1992 and Shalane Flanagan in 2008.
Cecilia Barowski '16 will not advance to the eight-person final of the 800 meters. Racing in heat 1 of the semifinals after a terrific second-place finish yesterday in the first round Barowski took eighth at 2:08.36. She remained in the pack though the first 400 but slowed for the final 400 meters.
In other news, as the Jamaican Olympic Trials are being held concurrently, Damon McLean '14 finished second in the triple jump at 16.46 but didn't automatically qualify with the mark of 16.85 that Jamaica deems needed. He, along with Usain Bolt, still have time to qualify for the Olympics as Jamaica has its own process to qualify.
Lizzie Bird '17 was fifth in the steeplechase at the UK trials and will not make the team. Neither will Nana Owusu-Nytantekyi '15 in the triple jump as he finished 12th.
Julia Ratcliffe '17 and Peter Callahan'13 are still vying for spots in Zealand and Belgium, respectively.
Princeton will be back in action at the US Trials on Monday as Ashley Higginson and Donn Cabral run in the first round of the steeplechase and Imani Oliver competes in the triple jump.
