July 22, 2016 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Former Princeton women's basketball player Annie Tarackhian '16 has signed a contract with BCF Elfic Fribourg Basket, a team from Switzerland.
Â
She becomes the fifth player under head coach Courtney Banghart to sign a professional contract. The others include Devon Allgood '12, Addie Micir '11, Niveen Rasheed '13 and Blake Dietrick '15. Dietrick became the second Ivy League player ever to make a WNBA roster as she made the Seattle Storm's opening night roster this season.
Â
"I am so thrilled and thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at the next level across the globe, especially on a team like Fribourg," said Tarakchian. "I know the style of play and dynamics will be quite different from college, but I think the experience and knowledge I've gained from both the coaches and my teammates in my time at Princeton has adequately prepared me to take this step. It's going to be an adventure and I'm excited to take it on for all that it is."
Â
"I'm so thrilled for Annie as she gets to follow her passion and fulfill her dream of playing professional basketball, said Banghart. "Annie had a great Princeton career and has absolutely earned this opportunity. She will bring an ability to rebound and score from a variety of places on the floor to her new team. We'll be following and supporting from home!"
Â
Tarakchian, most recently, had a banner senior campaign as she set career-highs in points (12.3) and rebounds (9.4) per game along with a personal-best 59 three-pointers made. The stretch player was an All-Ivy second team honoree and was named Ivy League Player of the Week three times. In her final collegiate contest, Tarakchian scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds vs. No. 25 West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That double-double was the 20th of her career.
Â
A two-time All-Ivy selection, Tarakchian finished her four years at Princeton ranked fifth in rebounds (749), 10th in rebound average (6.8) and 10th in games played (111). Her senior class went 97-23 including a 50-6 record in the Ivy League. She was part of two Ivy League Championships along with the program's first ever NCAA and WNIT Tournament victories. Tarakchian helped the team win at least 20 games in each of her four seasons including sweeps in 20 of its 23 Ivy League weekends. During her time, Princeton had two national rankings at No. 24 in 2012 and No. 13 during her junior season which was the highest ever in Ivy women's basketball history.
