Rio Recap, Day 5: Wind (And Lots Of It) Postpones Bertko Debut To Monday
August 07, 2016 | Women's Rowing - Open
Kate Bertko '06 has battled back from both injuries and the disappointments of missed Olympic qualifications over the span of a decade since she helped lead the Princeton open women to the 2006 NCAA Championship.
So, really, what's another 24 hours?
Bertko was scheduled to make her Olympic debut Sunday morning in the women's lightweight double, but weather conditions forced the cancellation of an entire day of rowing. The wind was so bad much of the Olympic tennis schedule Sunday morning was delayed as well.
Bertko will now be part of a loaded Monday schedule, which will also include the 2016 Rio debuts of both Glenn Ochal '08 and Lauren Wilkinson '11. Both of their opening heats were moved as well to fit in the full Sunday schedule. Here is what is (tentatively) scheduled for Monday now on the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Olympic race course.
Wilkinson will be up first, as she and the Canadian W8+ will race in their opening heat at 8:00 am ET. Ochal will follow in the USA M8+ opening heat at 8:20 am. Both heats will send one boat directly to the Aug. 13 final, while the rest will compete in a repechage Wednesday morning.
Bertko will now row at 10:10 am ET in her USA WL2x heat; two will advance directly to the Wednesday semifinal, while the rest will row in repechages that are now scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10:20 and 10:30 am.

Monday will also include the second match for the USA field hockey team, which had one of the biggest results of the Games on Saturday; Katie Reinprecht '13 scored one of the two American goals that led Team USA to a 2-1 upset over second-ranked Argentina.
