Men's Water Polo Picked 11th in CWPA National Poll; 2016 Season Starts at Navy
September 01, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) preseason top-20 poll came out today and placed the Princeton men's water polo team in a tie for 11th with Pepperdine University.
The defending two-time national champion, UCLA, topped the poll with 99 points. USC, California, Pacific and Stanford round out the top five. In the Northeast Water Polo Conference preseason ranks, the Tigers came in the top spot, finishing with one more point (95) than Brown.
Earlier this year, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) broke off into two separate conferences. Princeton will be part of the Northeast Water Polo Conference with the CWPA still serving as the governing body. For more information on the conference split, read the CWPA's release here.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad opens up the home portion of the schedule next week with the Princeton Invitational highlighted by a visit from No. 1 UCLA on Sept. 11 at 12 p.m. The Tigers head out west for the Pacific Coast Tournament (Sept. 23-25) before back-to-back weekends (Sept. 28-Oct. 9) of competition at DeNunzio Pool. After the Crimson Invitational (Oct. 15-16), the water polo squad wraps up the regular season with five road conference tilts.
One of the top returners is goalie Vojislav Mitrovic, a two-time honorable mention All-American. As a sophomore, Mitrovic had a 20-5 overall record and turned away 301 of the 502 shots he faced en route to a 0.600 save percentage. His 301 saves in 2015 are the most in any single-season in program history, surpassing Gregory Stoll's mark of 266 in 1997.
Jordan Colina, the team's second leading scorer last fall with 50 goals, is another outstanding returner. Colina had the most sprint victories on the Tigers (35) and was tied for the team-best in steals (43) and drawn ejections (36). Jovan Jeremic also comes back after an All-CWPA Southern second team accolade last year. Jeremic showed an all-around game as he recorded 34 goals, dished out 23 assists, snagged 23 steals and picked up 11 sprint wins.
Coming off the bench last season, Curtis Fink, Eric Bowen and Ryan Hammarskjold will give Princeton quality depth throughout the entire roster. Fink gave the Tigers double-figures in goals (10), steals (14) and drawn ejections (15) in 2015 while Bowen drew 25 ejections and Hammarskjold was named to the All-CWPA Academic team.
Building off their rookie seasons, Ryan Wilson, Michael Swart and Matt Payne will be looking to add even more firepower to the Tigers' offense. The three sophomores combined for 111 tallies, 32.5 percent of Princeton's goals in 2015. Ryan Melosini will provide relief for Mitrovic in goal this year.
A group of five freshmen, Sean Duncan, Evan Elig, Logan MacDonell, Davis Wachtell and Christopher Xi are also expected to contribute for the Tigers right away. With their established high school careers, the Class of 2020, all from the state of California, will be asked to build on a Princeton team has been to the NCAA Tournament three times in the past seven seasons.
