Payne's Hat Trick Not Enough as No. 1 UCLA Beats No. 11 Men's Water Polo

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 11 Princeton men's water polo team could not overcome a slow start, falling to the No. 1 UCLA Bruins, 18-9, at DeNunzio Pool on Sunday afternoon. The match was televised on ESPNU.
Sophomore Matt Payne boasted his third hat trick of the season while freshman Sean Duncan secured his sixth multi-goal game in eight contests. Sophomore Ryan Wilson assisted on four tallies, giving him 22 on the year and at least four helpers in four games. Princeton drew eight ejections and blocked two UCLA shots.
UCLA held Princeton without a goal for the first 12:14 of the contest, jumping in front 6-0. Payne scored his 12th goal of the season to get the Tigers on the board in the second quarter. Leading 8-2 at the half, UCLA scored eight times in the third stanza to put the game out of reach.
Princeton will take a week off before heading out to California for the Pacific Coast Tournament (Sept. 23-25). The times and opponents have not been announced yet.
