No. 11 Men's Water Polo Heads West For Mountain Pacific Invite
September 21, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – After a one week break, the No. 11 Princeton men's water polo team will take part in the Mountain Pacific Invitational hosted by No. 3 California this weekend (Sept. 23-25).
The Tigers will open the tournament vs. No. 6 UC-Santa Barbara on Friday at 8:15 p.m. (5:15 PST). The winner of that contest will take on the winner of Cal and Whittier on Saturday. Princeton is 1-1 all-time vs. UC-Santa Barbara with the last meeting coming 2004. Other teams in the Mountain Pacific Invitational include No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 USC, Cal, No. 4 Pacific, No. 5 Stanford, No. 7 Long Beach State, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 8 UC-Irvine, No. 11 UC-Davis, No. 18 San Jose State, Air Force, Pomona.
The 2016 campaign began at the Navy Open for the Tigers with a sparkling offensive performance, averaging over 20 goals a contest. Princeton scored wins over Fordham (17-10), PSU-Behrend (20-2), McKendree (18-6, exhibition) and Salem International (25-8). The team's 25 goals on Sunday were one shy of the program mark that was set on Sept. 25, 1999, coincidentally, also against Salem International (then Salem-Teikyo).
Following the Navy Open, head coach Luis Nicolao's team hosted the Princeton Invitational (Sept. 8-11). Princeton started the invitational with a 14-10 victory over Wagner on Sept. 8. Sophomores Matt Payne, Michael Swart, and Ryan Wilson tallied hat tricks in the game. The next day, the Tigers lost to Cal, 18-8, but defeated Air Force, 13-3. Junior Vojislav Mitrovic's 18 saves vs. Air Force were two shy of the program record. On Sept. 11, No. 1 UCLA defeated Princeton, 18-9, on a match that was featured on ESPNU.
Six Tigers have scored 10 goals or more, highlighted by freshman Sean Duncan's 18 tallies. Duncan also has a team-high 12 drawn ejections. Sophomore Ryan Wilson leads the team with 34 points (12 goals and 22 assists). Sophomore Michael Swart's 18 swipes top the squad while junior Jordan Colina is right behind him with 15 steals. Mitrovic is 3-2 on the season with 56 saves in five games.
