Mitrovic and Duncan Pick Up Weekly Honors; Men's Water Polo Jumps In National Poll
September 14, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Vojislav Mitrovic was selected as the Northeast Water Polo Conference Defensive Player of the Week while Sean Duncan was honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week. The Tigers also improved to a tie for No. 9 on the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) National Poll today.
Mitrovic had three 10+ save outings this weekend including an incredible 18-save performance vs. No. 15 Air Force. In that contest, Air Force was held scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game and then again in the second half for over 15 minutes. The goalie also 13 stops vs. No. 3 Cal and made 12 more vs. No. 20 Santa Clara.
Duncan's weekend was highlighted by a five-goal performance vs. No. 20 Santa Clara on Saturday. The freshman scored on all, but one attempt and swiped three passes. Duncan also scored twice vs. No. 1 UCLA. In five games, the Seal Beach, Calif., native also drew 10 ejections including a season-best four vs. Wagner.
In the CWPA national poll, the Tigers are tied for No. 9 with Pepperdine and Harvard. The two-time defending national champion, UCLA, is still on top with 99 points, with USC (94), Cal (92), Pacific (85) and Stanford rounding out the top-five (81).
Head coach Luis Nicolao's team started the Princeton Invitational with a 14-10 victory over Wagner last Thursday. Sophomores Matt Payne, Michael Swart and Ryan Wilson tallied hat tricks in the game. On Friday, Princeton lost to No. 3 Cal, 18-8, but defeated then No. 15 Air Force, 13-3. Mitrovic's 18 saves vs. Air Force were two shy of the program record. No. 1 UCLA defeated Princeton, 18-9, on a match that was featured on ESPNU.
Princeton has a week off before taking part in the Pacific Coast Tournament, hosted by Cal the following week (Sept. 23-25). The Tigers will open the tournament vs. No. 6 UC-Santa Barbara on Sept. 23 at 8:15 p.m.
