PRINCETON, N.J. (9/6/16) - The Princeton men's soccer team kicks off the 2016 home slate on Thursday, September 8 when it hosts St. John's. Game time is at 7 p.m., on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton opened the season last Saturday in a 1-0 loss at West Virginia. The Tigers allowed just one shot on goal, in the 43rd minute, and faced an uphill battle playing down two players in the second half. Princeton replaces five of 11 starters from last year's squad that posted a 10-5-2 overall record. The last two seasons the Tigers have had to replace the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and the league's leading scorer, Cameron Porter in 2014 and Thomas Sanner in 2015. Senior Josh Haberman made the start against the Mountaineers behind a veteran back line.
Princeton is 2-0-1 in its last three home openers, including a scoreless draw with St. John's in 2014. It's last loss in a home opener was 2012 to Rutgers.
St. John's owns a slight edge in the all-time series, 4-2-3, since the teams first met in 1995. The Tigers took the last meeting, a 2-1 game last year thanks to a Sanner goal in the 87th minute. The Red Storm got on the board four minutes before the close of the first half on a Filippo Ricupati goal before Nicholas Badalamenti knotted it in the 71st. The game was Princeton's first of the season as as it outshot St. John's 14-8.
St. John's is 1-1-1 overall and is coming off of a double overtime loss at No. 6 Syracuse. The Johnnies played to a tie with Drexel on Aug. 26 and defeated St. Peter's 2-0 on Aug. 31 in a pair of home games. St. John's averages 15.7 shots per game, more than six more than its opponents. Junior Harry Cooksley leads the offense with two goals and one assist, while freshman Alistair Johnston has tallied two goals. Both sophomore Mike Prosul and freshman Ludvik Benco have one assist apiece. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Withers and redshirt freshman Michael Bernardi have both played in goal in all three games. Withers has made two starts and in 135 minutes has allowed one goal on four shots, while Bernardi has allowed two on eight shots in 170 minutes.
