No. 11 Men's Water Polo Hosts Princeton Invitational This Weekend
September 07, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 11 Princeton men's water polo team will host the Princeton Invitational (Sept. 8-11) at DeNunzio Pool this weekend.
The Tigers will take on five teams including four ranked inside the most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) national poll. On Thursday, head coach Luis Nicolao's squad will open up the tournament vs. Wagner before matchups vs. No. 3 California and No. 15 Air Force on Friday. No. 20 Santa Clara is the team's only contest on Saturday before a showdown vs. No. 1 UCLA on Sunday. The UCLA match will be on ESPNU while all other games will be on the Ivy League Digital Network.
This weekend will be the first time that the program has ever faced Wagner. The Tigers are 0-2 all-time against Cal, but have taken three of four from Air Force. Princeton is looking for its eighth victory in 11 tries vs. Santa Clara which includes a 12-7 victory on the road last season. The two-time defending national champion, UCLA, is 10-0 vs. Princeton.
The Tigers opened up the 2016 campaign at the Navy Open with a sparkling offensive performance, averaging over 20 goals a contest. Princeton scored wins over Fordham (17-10), PSU-Behrend (20-2), McKendree (18-6, exhibition) and Salem International (25-8). The team's 25 goals on Sunday were one shy of the program mark that was set on Sept. 25, 1999, coincidentally, also against Salem International (then Salem-Teikyo).
It was a balanced offensive effort at the Navy Open as 14 different Tigers scored. Junior Jordan Colina led the group with nine tallies on 10 shots. Sophomore Ryan Wilson dished out a team-high 13 assists while sophomore Michael Swart snagged 12 steals. Sophomore Ryan Melosini started every game for the Tigers in goal and came up with 19 saves. Two-time honorable mention All-American junior Vojislav Mitrovic is expected to make his season-debut this weekend.
One of the most encouraging signs from the first weekend of the Navy Open was the contribution from the freshman class. Sean Duncan dropped in eight goals on 10 shots, Evan Elig had 10 assists, four steals and went 7-4 on sprints, while Christopher Xi added four goals, four assists, three steals and two drawn ejections. Davis Wachtell swiped four passes, had two goals and Logan MacDonell scored five times and drew five ejections.
All games except the Princeton vs. UCLA match will be on the Ivy League Digital Network. People can buy the Ivy League Digital Network package for $9.95 a day. Here's a list of the games this weekend.
