January 10, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Â
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers will host their first Ivy League weekend doubleheader as the Brown Bears (Jan. 13) and the Yale Bulldogs (Jan. 14) travel to Jadwin Gymnasium. Tip-off for each game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Â
As the first Ivy League weekend is fast approaching, here are five items to watch out for.
Â
Princeton's Defense – A staple of head coach Courtney Banghart's tenure, the Tigers rank in the top 20 in three-point field goal defense (24.9 percent, seventh), field goal percentage defense (34.7, 19th) and scoring defense (55.2, 20th). Princeton has held eight teams to 60 points or less this season. In last year's meetings, the Tigers held Brown under 60 points twice and Yale once.
Â
Brown's Well-Rounded Scoring: Brown leads the Ivy League in scoring (73.6) with four players averaging double figures. Harvard is the next closest conference team in offense (68.7), almost five points behind Brown. The Bears have three players in the Ivy's top 10 in scoring, highlighted by Taylor Will's 15.7 per contest, good for second. Will played a total of nine minutes against Princeton last season. Justine Gaziano's 16.9 points per game would be the second highest in the conference if she qualified.
Â
Brown's Three-Point Field Goal Percentage: The Bears are one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country, sitting at 36.4 percent (34th). Four players for Brown are shooting at least 35 percent from beyond the arc. Gaziano's 43.5 percent leads the team while Shayna Mehta is also up over 40 percent deep (41.7). Brown was 12-of-40 (21.6 percent) from the three-point line in two Princeton victories last year.
Â
Yale's Three-Pointers Made: Yale makes 7.8 threes a game, which is 41st in all of Division-I, but is only fifth in the Ivy League in three-point field goal percentage (33.2). Among players who average at least one three-pointer per game, Mary Ann Santucci's 47.1 percent from long range is second in the conference. Jen Berkowitz has made 11-of-21 attempts (52.4 percent) from deep this year as well.
Â
Not feeling Charitable?: The Bulldogs' 107 free throws this season are the fewest in the entire country while their free throw percentage (60.8) is 325th out of 344 teams. Yale has two players that are over 60 percent from the charity stripe in Jen Berkowitz (83.3) and Lena Munzer (75.0). The Bulldogs have not made more 10 free throws in each of its last three games.
