Morey Coaches Team Canada at World Championships
January 10, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
There's been an essential member of the Princeton women's hockey team missing from the bench the last couple of weeks. Who? Associate head coach Cara Morey.
Also an assistant coach with Team Canada, Morey is with the Under-18 Team at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation U18 Women's World Championship in the Czech Republic.
"Cara is a great coach and motivator," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We miss her here but we are proud of her and recognize the important job she has in Zlin. She is certainly deserving of the honor to coach Team Canada".
Canada opens up the 2017 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship with a 5-1 win over Sweden on Jan. 7 before edging Russia 4-2 on Sunday. Canada will face the United States on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 9:30 a.m., with both teams currently undefeated. "It's been an amazing experience so far," Morey said. We have been treated so well in the Czech Republic. The competition has been tough with both Sweden and Russia bringing strong teams and I'm excited to see today's match up against the USA. I've been following the Tigers every day since I left and I can't be more proud of our team and our culture. They're undefeated since I left and I know they're going to battle again this weekend."
The bronze-medal and gold-medal games are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. (all times are Eastern)
After taking home a silver medal in 2016 in St. Catharines, Ont., the Canadians will be in search of their fifth gold medal in tournament history, having won in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014.
A gold medalist as a player with Team Canada at the 2000 Nations Cup, she won gold as an assistant coach with Canada's National Women's Development Team at the 2015 Nations Cup in Germany. Morey was also a coach at the National Development Team Camps in 2012 and 2014, at the 2014 National Women's Team Fall Festival and at the 2016 National Women's Under 18 three-game series with the US this past August.
Morey is in her sixth season as a member of the coaching staff at Princeton. She helped coached the Tigers to the Ivy League title and an NCAA at-large bid in 2015-16, and guided Patty Kazmaier candidate Kelsey Koelzer to first-team All-America honors. In total, Morey has coached 12 all-Ivy League selections and five all-ECAC Hockey players in just six years.
Hockey Canada wrote a piece on Morey and her mentoring of not only the women's national team but her three daughters as the next generation of female hockey players this past summer. Click here to read "Mom's the Word at Summer Showcase"
