Early Rebound Goals Lift Columbia Over No. 11 Princeton, 2-0
October 14, 2017 | Women's Soccer
It was an unfamiliar feeling for the 11th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team Saturday night, not only seeing an opponent score one goal, but two, and in the span of less than two minutes.
Columbia scored just the fourth and fifth goals against the Tigers this year, with Natalie Neshat and Emily Koe each putting in a rebound off an Amaris Hemmings cross or shot just 97 seconds apart in the 10th and 11th minutes to beat Princeton, 2-0. That put Princeton two goals behind for the first time all season, as Princeton had only trailed by a goal to then-No. 6 West Virginia on Sept. 15 and last weekend at Brown.
Unlike last Saturday, when a pair of late Courtney O'Brien goals helped Princeton rally, the Tigers' opponent held on. Princeton outshot Columbia 20-12 on the night, but two of Columbia's eight shots on goal to Princeton's eight went in, and that was enough as keeper Sophie Whitehouse and the Lions turned in just the second shutout against the Tigers all season. Princeton outdrew Columbia 10-0 in corner kicks, but the Tigers were unable to convert.
The win also puts Columbia alone in first place at 4-0 (8-4-1 overall) with 12 points, three points ahead of the 3-1 (11-2) Tigers. Yale and Penn, each 2-1-1 in the league, have seven points to sit two back of Princeton heading into the final three weekends.
Princeton will hit the road next weekend at Harvard for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
