No. 17 Princeton Wins 6-1 at Harvard to Keep Pace in Ivy Race
October 21, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Finding themselves three points back of Columbia in the Ivy League race entering the day, the 17th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team did its part Saturday, getting goals from Vanessa Gregoire, Courtney O'Brien and Mimi Asom to beat Harvard 6-1.
Columbia beat Dartmouth to remain three points up on Princeton with two more weekends in the Ivy season. The Lions will have each of their final two at home, against Yale and Harvard, while the Tigers host Cornell next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before visiting Penn.
Gregoire put Princeton on the board when Harvard couldn't clear the ball following a deep throw-in less than nine minutes into the game. An Eve Hewins centering pass off the Natalie Larkin throw-in met a Harvard leg, and after Tomi Kennedy's try was blocked, Gregoire put the rebound back on net and scored for the 1-0 lead.
Harvard tied it up in the 31st minute, but the tie lasted less than two minutes before O'Brien put Princeton back on top. Larkin found Samantha McDonough in the left corner before McDonough sent a centering pass for O'Brien that O'Brien one-touched into the net for the 2-1 advantage.
Asom made it 3-1 for the Tigers less than six minutes after halftime when Abby Givens made a pass into the 18-yard box, and Olivia Kane made a quick flick to Asom for the finish. Asom made it 4-1 10 minutes later when Givens, with the ball in the box, found an open Asom, who threaded it through four Harvard players as they converged on her. The two goals gave the junior her fourth career multi-goal game.
Eve Hewins scored her first career goal with 16-plus minutes to play, corralling a ball just outside of the 18 off a goal kick and hammering it off Harvard keeper Kat Hess and in. Hewins became the third rookie to score this season, joining classmates Kane and Carolyne Davidson.
O'Brien closed the scoring with her second goal of the game, taking a pass forward from McDonough and putting one touch on it just before the 6-yard box and in the net for her fourth career two-goal game, all this season.
The four points put Asom in eighth place on Princeton's all-time career points list with 61, and the two goals give her 28 for her career, tying her for sixth in program history with Lauren Lazo '15. Princeton's five-goal margin of victory was its largest ever at Harvard and matched the largest in program history against the Crimson, tying a 5-0 win from 2006 at Princeton's then-home, Lourie-Love Field.
