No. 15 Princeton Defeats Cornell 2-0 in Ivy Home Finale
October 28, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Princeton's annual meeting with Cornell went the Tigers' way for the 22nd year in a row as the Tigers did their part to keep pace in the Ivy League race with the 2-0 win Saturday, and by the time the Ivy's day was complete, the Tigers were in first place.
Princeton will head into next weekend sharing the top spot with previously league-unbeaten Columbia, which lost 1-0 to Yale Saturday. A Princeton win Saturday at Penn, in a 4 p.m. start, will give the Tigers a share of the Ivy League title. If Princeton beats Penn and Columbia ties or loses to Harvard (Saturday, 5 p.m. at Columbia), the Tigers will get the Ivy title outright and the Ivy League's automatic NCAA tournament bid. That would also be Princeton's prize if the Tigers tied and Columbia lost. If Princeton and Columbia end even, the Lions would get the Ivy bid thanks to Columbia's 2-0 win at Princeton on Oct. 14, but both would be Ivy champs.
The Tigers got on the board in the 31st minute when Mimi Asom found Vanessa Gregoire in the 18-yard box and Gregoire fired one inside the left post. In the last minute of the half, it was Asom who scored after Olivia Kane drew a penalty kick upon being tripped up in the box with 34 seconds before the break.
Princeton outshot the Big Red 24-5 overall and 13-3 on goal, forcing Cornell keeper Meghan Kennedy to make 11 saves. The shutout was the 10th of the season for Princeton, with this year's team in a four-way tie for third-most in program history, and the ninth for sophomore keeper Natalie Grossi, putting her in a four-way tie for the second-most shutouts in program history, one back pf the record.
