Men's Lightweight 8+ Victory Highlights Strong Effort at 53rd Head of the Charles

A victorious effort from the Tiger men's lightweight 8+ highlighted a strong Princeton performance Sunday at the 53rd Head of the Charles. The lightweights won their first Charles since consecutive victories in 2013-2014, and they did so by more than 10 seconds over reigning national champion Cornell.
Not only did Princeton exhibit speed from its top boat, it also showed off its depth. The Tiger lightweights had the only 'B' boat that placed in the overall Top 10; the 'A' boat won in 13:49.68, while the 'B' took second overall in 14:15.09. Similar to the 'A' crews, no other lightweight 'B' was within 10 seconds of Princeton.
The Princeton women's lightweight 8+ also had a top-five finish in its field. The Tigers, coming off their first postseason with medals in both the Sprints and IRAs, finished fifth overall in 16:17. Princeton competed with only two seniors in the boat (coxswain Megan Mirabella, bow Emily Schneider).
The Tiger heavyweights raced two boats in their championship event, and their 'A' crew finished eighth overall in 13:44.58. The Princeton 'B' crew, which was able to row a handful of the program's talented freshman class, posted a Top-20 finish by taking 19th in 14:08.91. Among collegiate crews, those finishes ranked 6th and 16th overall.
The reigning Ivy League champion Princeton open women sent both an 8+ and a 4+ to the Charles. The eight, which had a pair of freshmen included in the boat, finished 12th overall, seventh among collegiate boats, in 12:31.48. The four had a very strong performance, finishing third overall in 17:24.11.
There were two other fours at the Charles. The heavyweight men 4+ took eighth in 16:12.00, while the lightweight women 4+ took fourth in 18:25.72. You can find the full schedule here.
The fall racing season will wrap up next weekend at the prestigious Princeton Chase, scheduled to begin at 9 am on Sunday, Oct. 29.
