Schrage Makes ITA Regional Final, Set for Monday
October 22, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Maybe it's something about rookies from New Jersey.
Princeton freshman Stephanie Schrage won twice Sunday to make the singles final at the ITA Northeast Regional at Penn, becoming the first Tiger to do so since another Garden Stater, Amanda Muliawan '16, when she was a freshman in 2012.
Schrage, seeded in the second eight, beat Long Island's Anna Grigoryan 6-4, 7-6(3) in Saturday morning's quarterfinals before achieving her first upset of the tournament, knocking off second-seeded Miranda Ramirez of Syracuse, who is ranked 59th in the nation by the ITA, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Up next is another Orange player, the tournament's top seed, 38th-ranked Gabriela Knutson, in Monday's 8 a.m. final. In winning five matches to reach the final, Knutson has allowed just nine games, winning all of those matches in straight sets and conceding no more than two games in any of those sets.
