No. 12 Princeton Beats MIT, 14-5, Drops Close 10-9 Decision To No. 14 Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers picked up a split in Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) play with a 14-5 victory over the MIT Engineers and a close 10-9 loss to the No. 14 Harvard Crimson on Saturday night.
With the split, Princeton is now 18-5 overall and 5-2 in the NWPC. The Tigers and Crimson (17-6 overall, 5-2 NWPC) are now tied for second place. St. Francis-Brooklyn remains atop the conference with an unbeaten mark (7-0). The Tigers finish the weekend at No. 15 Brown tomorrow (10 a.m.)
The Highlights: MIT
Princeton scored seven straight between the first and second periods.
MIT was held to just three tallies in the first half.
Sean Duncan and Matt Payne scored hat tricks in the victory.
Princeton recorded the final three goals of the first quarter to a 5-2 advantage. MIT was held scoreless over 11 minutes of game action in the first half as the Tigers raced out to a 11-3 lead at the intermission.
After MIT got within six in the second half, the Tigers would shut out the Engineers for more than seven and half minutes as it extended its lead to 14-5, cruising to a victory.

A defensive battle in the first eight minutes, the home squad took a 2-1 lead into the second stanza. Another closely contested second frame gave the Crimson a 4-3 advantage at halftime as Charlie Owens' scored with 42 seconds remaining.
Sean Duncan recorded his fourth consecutive tally of the game to open the second half, tying the NWPC meeting at 4-all. Harvard would snag the next two before it was Princeton's turn to go on a run. Two goals from Jordan Colina and another one from Matt Payne gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead with 3:07 to go in the quarter. Harvard rallied to tie the game at 8-all after 24 minutes.
Colina's fourth tally of the night put the Tigers back in front, 9-8, to begin the fourth quarter, but Harvard answered back a little over a minute later. Bunn's goal with 1:10 left proved to be the game-winner for the Crimson.
It's fourth time in the last five games between Harvard and Princeton that was decided by one goal.
