Four Tigers Score as No. 11 Princeton Takes Final Non-League Game at Bucknell, 4-0
October 03, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Princeton's top three goal scorers on the season had one apiece in the first half before a Tiger rookie added one late in a 4-0 win for the 11th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team Tuesday night at Bucknell.
Princeton doubled up Bucknell in shots 22-11 overall and outshot the Bison on goal 14-4. While two of her sophomore classmates scored in Abby Givens and Courtney O'Brien, keeper Natalie Grossi and the Tiger backliners posted Princeton's ninth shutout of the season, just four short of the program record. The clean sheet was Grossi's eighth of the season, two short of the program's best.
Givens got Princeton on the board with her Ivy-best ninth goal of the season with 24 minutes before halftime, winning a ball that senior Mikaela Symanovich had served forward before turning and firing from just beyond the corner of the 18-yard box and tucking the try under the crossbar. Five minutes later, Givens and rookie Olivia Kane, who had Princeton's last goal late in the game, moved the ball forward before finding O'Brien just before the six-yard box for the finish. With six minutes before halftime, Asom worked a ball forward and warded off her Bucknell defender before firing a low liner in just before the 18.
Asom's goal, the 26th of her career, puts the junior into a tie for seventh-most in program history with Amelia Reyes '01 and Diana Matheson '08.
Kane gave Princeton its first four-goal game of the season when O'Brien saved a ball from going over the endline and found Kane at the corner of the six for the finish.
Bucknell had posted six straight shutouts entering the game and hadn't allowed a goal in 578:25 before Givens broke the streak.
Princeton now leads the all-time series with Bucknell 7-1-1. Their non-league schedule now complete for the regular season, the Tigers will end their three-game road swing at Brown Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the Ivy League Network.
