Kuffner Has Three-Point Game as Tigers Fall in OT at Union
November 10, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton versus Union in overtime. It was almost like deja vu of the quarterfinals, both one-goal games last year in the ECAC quarterfinals with Princeton's season ending in OT on a penalty shot. This time the Tigers will see another day as they look to rebound at Rensselaer on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Junior Ryan Kuffner had a three-point game, including an early goal, before Union took a 3-1 lead. The Tigers rallied with two in the third to force extra time.
Sebastian Vidmar scored the game-winning goal with 25.7 seconds left in overtime as the Dutchmen had to chase down a cleared puck with 30 seconds to play. Vidmar dished the puck off to Rinaldi and then made his way to the front of the net and was got the puck back on his stick and put it between the pads of Ryan Ferland.
Senior defenseman Josh Teves started the play on Kuffner's first goal and he forced Union (6-6, 4-1 ECAC) into a turnover at the checkered red and walked the puck down the right boards. As he got Jake Kupsky focusing on him, he sent the puck across the slot to Kuffner who was wide open for the back-door goal at 3:33.
Union evened things up just 49 seconds into the second period on a Ryan Scarfo goal. The Dutchmen scored two goals less than four minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead at 15:20 of the second. Anthony Rinaldi tried to put the puck in on the blocker side of Ferland, but he was taken down as well as a defender and a Union skater got the sticks tied up and both took a tumble and the puck was nudged over the goal line. Sean Harrison tipped in a drive by J.C. Brassard minutes later as Union took the 3-1 into the second intermission.
Junior Max Véronneau intercepted a Union breakout in the third and with Kuffner circling back to the offensive blue line he went in one-on-one with Kupsky. With a step or two ahead of his defender, Vas Kolias, Kolias still tried to hook Kuffner and as the referee signaled an infraction, Kuffner went five hole on Kupsky to make it a one-goal game at 9:08 of the third.
Princeton (1-2-1, 0-2-1 ECAC) had an opportunity to tie things up with 1:03 of 5x3 action on the Kolias hook and then a kneeing call on Brandon Estes. Union's penalty kill was relentless giving up just two shots on goal.
Véronneau added his third of the season at 14:15 from Kuffner and Riche. In transition, Riche ripped a shot that went off of Kupsky and out to the left side for Kuffner. Kuffner threw it on cage and Véronneau sealed the deal.

In a game in which just five penalties were called overall, the Tigers were called for two in the five-minute overtime period, giving the Dutchmen an extra skater for all but 2:09. Union took a 13-0 edge in shots on goal in that overtime period.
Ferland finished the game with a career-high 40 saves for the Tigers, while Kupsky stopped 24 shots in his first win of the season.
Princeton was 0 for 2 on the power play while Union was 1 for 3.
