November 10, 2017 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Tia Weledji dropped in team-high 18 points while Leslie Robinson added a double-double as the Princeton Tigers earned a convincing 72-52 decision over the George Washington Colonials at Jadwin Gym on Friday evening.
Last year against the Colonials, Princeton managed just 45 points, 17 baskets and shot just 30.4 percent in a 11-point loss.
Tonight, Princeton reached the 45-point mark with 4:38 left in the third quarter, was 27-of-56 from the floor (48.2 percent) and won by 20.
Robinson posted her eighth career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also dishing out five assists, swiping two steals and blocking a shot. Carlie Littlefield registered 14 points, five boards and four assists in her collegiate debut. Bella Alarie just missed a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Tigers started quickly, scoring the first five points before a 7-3 stretch from George Washington got the game within one (8-7). This time, Princeton went on an outburst with nine straight, pushing its advantage to 10 (17-7) with 3:50 to go in the first quarter. Princeton took a 23-13 lead into the second stanza behind Alarie's nine points in the frame.
George Washington began the second quarter with an 11-4 spurt, cutting its deficit to three (27-24) at the 4:19 mark. The Tigers held a 33-30 advantage at the intermission, despite going 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. The Colonials got back in the game with a 7-of-16 performance (43.8 percent) in the quarter.
The second half began in impressive fashion for head coach Courtney Banghart's squad as it held George Washington without a basket for the first 6:28 of game action. During that time, the Tigers scored 14 straight points, taking a 47-30 lead. The road team scored on two of its next three possessions, but the Tigers ended the third quarter with a flurry, ripping off five points in the final 45 seconds including a three-pointer from Gabrielle Rush as time expired to go in front by 21 (60-39).
George Washington would not get any closer than 17 the rest of the way. Kelli Prange had a game-high 21 points while Kelsi Mahoney snagged 11 points in the loss. The Tigers had McKenna Haire and Taylor Baur record their first collegiate points.
Princeton will travel to the Seton Hall Pirates on Thursday (7 p.m.) before welcoming the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to Jadwin on Sunday (1 p.m.).
