Swart Selected as NWPC Player of the Week; Princeton Up To No. 12 in CWPA Varsity Poll

PRINCETON, N.J. – Michael Swart was selected as the the Northeast Water Polo Conference Player of the Week while Princeton jumped to No. 12 in this week's Collegiate Water Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll.
Princeton's (21-5, 8-2 NWPC) defense shined in the second half against No. 16 St. Francis-Brooklyn on Saturday, allowing just one goal, in a 13-9 takedown at DeNunzio Pool on Saturday.
After the Terriers jumped in front, 3-1, the Tigers closed with one, trailing 4-3 after eight minutes. St. Francis outscored Princeton, 4-2, in the second quarter and took an 8-5 advantage into halftime. The home squad pitched a shutout in the third stanza, jumping in front, 9-8. By the time that the Terriers scored again, it was the 2:54 mark of the fourth quarter and Princeton led 12-9. Princeton shut out St. Francis-Brooklyn for 13 minutes and 10 seconds.
With the four-goal win over the Terriers, Princeton will now be the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament (Nov. 17-19) at Harvard University. St. Francis-Brooklyn is the No. 2 seed, followed by Harvard, Brown, MIT and Iona. The Tigers will play the winner of Brown and MIT in the semifinals on Nov. 18 (5 p.m.).
Swart led the Tigers last week with nine goals and two steals to earn the honor as NWPC Player of the Week. Swart netted a hat trick and a steal in a 15-5 drubbing of Iona College on Nov. 1 Returning to action on Saturday at DeNunzio, Swart doubled his previous goal tally, netting a team-high six goals and a steal to help the Tigers in their win over St. Francis-Brooklyn.
Cal., is now the new No. 1 team in the Varsity Poll, followed by USC, Stanford, UCLA and Pacific. NWPC teams in the poll include No. 14 Brown, No. 15 Harvard and No. 16 St. Francis- Brooklyn.
