Harvard Upends Princeton, 5-2
December 02, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
After taking scoring nine goals on Dartmouth on Friday night, a lot of people wondered if Princeton had any more goals in the tank for tonight's game with Harvard. Even more questions developed as the Tigers lost two skaters during the game with injuries - forcing Princeton to constantly reshuffle its lines in a 5-2 loss to the Crimson.
Harvard converted on its first two power-play opportunities to take a 2-0 lead after the first period.
Princeton's David Hallisey, who had a two-point night, cut the lead back to one at 4:38 of the second period with his eighth goal of the season. Hallisey kept the puck in the zone by gloving down a clear by Harvard. He found Max Becker to the left of the goal and he dished it off to Jackson Cressey before Hallisey got to the slot to roof one over Michael Lackey.
Right after Lackey an incredible save on Cressey the Crimson quickly transitioned and it resulted in a Ryan Donato goal. One minute and 12 seconds later Wiley Sherman made it 4-1.
After 40 minutes Harvard had a 31-11 advantage in shots, and had four power-play opportunities while Princeton had just two.
Eric Robinson tallied his fifth goal of the season just 2:21 of the third period on the power play as he nailed a perfect back-door goal on a pass across the slot from Hallisey. Cressey had the second assist - his 10th helper of the season.
The Tigers came alive in that third and had a 14-2 shot differential and at times held possession in the Harvard zone for extended periods of time looking to get those two markers. With 1:12 remaining and Princeton with a ton of momentum, the extra attacker went on and more chances game with Lackey standing tall.
An empty-net goal by Jack Badini with 49 seconds remaining deflated the hopes of an equalizer.
Both teams were 2 for 4 on the power play, with Lackey stopped 23 shots for Harvard and Ryan Ferland making 28 saves for Princeton.
The Tigers will head to Arizona State for a two-game set with the Sun Devils next weekend, Dec. 8 & 9.
