Fencing Teams Sweep Vassar Duals
December 03, 2017 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Both Princeton fencing teams combined for an 8-0 day at the Vassar Duals as the Tigers swept Sacred Heart, NYU, Vassar and annual national contender Penn State at Vassar.
The wins come on Princeton's second day of competition of the new season and two months before the Tigers compete again, Feb. 3-4 at the Northwestern Duals held at Notre Dame.
Freshman épée Tatijana Stewart and sophomore épée Farrah Lee-Elabd co-led Princeton with 11-1 records Sunday while senior foil Taylor Chin went 9-0. Rookie saber Daniel Kwak led the Tiger men with a 10-2 record with senior saber Edward Chin at 9-3.
Princeton's men's bout against Penn State saw the Tigers take a 13-9 lead but continue to search for the decisive win until a battle of brothers went Princeton's way. Junior épée Michael Popovici battled brother and Penn State freshman Nico Popovici to a 4-4 draw through regulation before Michael Popovici scored the winning touch in overtime to clinch the match for the Tigers. Princeton had just two men's saber fencers on hand Sunday, with épées Wesley Johnson, Daniel Sitbon-Taylor, Popovici and Wesley Yuan taking turns filling in. Yuan drew the assignment against Penn State and picked up a win in his three bouts, defeating Nittany Lion rookie Inti Farfan-Bayerl 5-4 to pick up one of the 14 wins the Tigers needed.
