Tigers Six-Game Unbeaten Streak Snapped at RPI
February 17, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton's six-game unbeaten streak came to a halt tonight as RPI tripped up the Tigers, 4-3. Princeton outshot the Engineers 43-27 but the Tigers couldn't convert on six power-play chances and fell behind early.
Princeton's power play struggled to click in the first period, failing to convert on four chances. After taking back-to-back penalties, RPI converted on its first power-play chance of the game. Viktor Lilegren was on the doorstep and his shot was stopped by the pad of senior Colton Phinney but the rebound came back out to the stick of Riley Bourbonnais and he popped in the rebound at 8:33 of the first period.
Jake Marrello made it 2-0 at 14:32 after he won a face off deep in the zone back to his defender Wilson. Wilson's shot from the right point was redirected by Marrello into the back of the goal.
Princeton cut it back to a one-goal deficit at 6:59 of the second thanks to the work of junior defender Joe Grabowski. He kept the puck in at the blue line with a big swipe and Kuffner was still down low. Kuffner shook off two defenders and put the puck five hole on Chase Perry.
The Engineers edged back ahead at 8:04 as Patrick Polino put a perfectly placed put on the blade of Bourbonnais. Bourbonnais was in the slot and was open for the tally.
The Tigers responded quickly with as senior Tommy Davis answered back 21 seconds later with his first goal of the season to make it 3-2. He did all the work, keeping in a breakout, skating from right to left around the back of the goal with two defenders on and wrapping it around past the outstretched pad of Perry at 8:23.
As Princeton outshot RPI 16-7 in the second, the Engineers fourth goal with 1:08 to play spoiled the mood. Jared Wilson roofed a shot in with a blast from the left point over the shoulder of Phinney to push his team ahead 4-2.
Davis did some work in the corner to get a puck to sophomore Max Véronneau behind the goal, he skated out to the top of the circle and sent a cross-ice pass to Matt Nelson. Nelson one-timed the puck and freshman Jackson Cressey redirected the shot past Perry just 39 seconds into the third period, to make it a one-goal game.
Princeton had all the momentum in the third, and after putting the extra skater on with 1:15 remaining, were not able to net the equalizer.
Phinney made 23 saves in goal for Princeton, while Perry stopped 40 shots on the opposite end.
The Tigers take on No. 7 Union on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Dutchmen topped Quinnipiac 4-1 this evening in Schenectady.
Princeton drops to ninth in the ECAC standings, one point behind both Dartmouth and Yale and one point ahead of Colgate - though its game is not yet final.
