Davis Scores Twice as Tigers Fall at No. 7 Union 4-2
February 18, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Senior defender Tommy Davis scored both of Princeton's goal as the Tigers fell to No. 7 Union, 4-2 on Saturday night at Messa Rink. Davis, who entered the weekend without a goal this weekend, scored three during his trip to Albany.
Two power-play goals, scored just 58 seconds apart proved to be backbreaking as the Dutchmen converted on both of their power-play opportunities of the game.
Princeton (11-13-3, 6-11-3) outshot Union (22-8-2, 15-4-1), 36-32 with senior netminder Colton Phinney stopping 28 shots.
It was high energy from the opening puck drop with Union taking early possession before Princeton found its confidence and started to create some offensive pressure. Even without two power-play chances the Tigers had some good nips at Alex Sakellaropoulos, who had to stop 13 in the first period – while Phinney made seven on the opposite end. Phinney's best save was an outstretched glove on a short-handed chance by Sebastian Vidmar with two minutes to play in the first.
Davis put Princeton on the board first at 1:10 of the second. He intercepted a pass intended for Spencer Foo at the first blue line, took four steps and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Sakellaropoulos.
Princeton had a 19-9 edge in shots on goal before Union started to get hot in the second period. Nick DeSimone ended Phinney's clean sheet with a tying goal 14:46. In a breakout, Vas Kolias found Foo and he slotted it for DeSimone who blasted a shot into the back of the net.
Brett Supinski and Jeff Taylor scored power-play goals at 11:19 and 12:17 as Union took a 3-1 lead.
Phinney was still sharp making an unbelievable save on Foo twice at the left pipe before Supinski's goal.
Senior Ben Foster took the puck from Taylor in front of the Union net and fired one on frame. The rebound came back out to freshman Jackson Cressey in the slot and he fed Davis at the left pipe to make it a 3-2 game.
Senior Garrett Skrbich nearly tied it up with five minutes left when he was left open in the high slot but his shot sailed just over the bar.
Princeton put the extra skater on with one minute remaining, but a shot by Eric Robinson was stopped by Sakellaropoulos and out to the stick of Greg Campbell. Campbell turned and fired in the empty-net goal with 26.7 seconds left.
