Richey Award Finalist Maria Elena Ubina Leads Way As Tigers Host 2017 Howe Cup
February 23, 2017 | Women's Squash
Senior co-captain Maria Elena Ubina, who was named a finalist for the prestigious Richey Award this past week, will lead the Princeton women's squash team into the 2017 Howe Cup Championships this weekend. She won't have to travel far, though — her final team matches will be held in the friendly confines of Jadwin Gym.
The fourth-seeded Tigers will open competition Friday at 2:30 pm against fifth-seeded Yale during the quarterfinal round of the CSA national team championships. The full weekend will be streamed live on SquashTV. The first-round matches will be played on Courts 5,6,7, with the winner likely to play top-seeded Harvard Saturday at 2:30 pm on Courts 1,2,3.
The championship match will be held Sunday at 1:30 pm on Courts 1,2,3. The top two seeds on the bottom half of the draw are #2 Penn and #3 Trinity.
Princeton isn't concerned about anybody besides Yale, a team the Tigers topped 5-4 in New Haven earlier this season. The Tigers capitalized on their depth that afternoon by winning every match between 5-9. The Tigers have won four straight in this series, though their last loss came in a 5-4 quarterfinal match the last time the Howe Cup was played at Jadwin (2013).
Both Ubina and Yale's Jenny Scherl will take the court during that quarterfinal showdown, and they are also both among the finalists for the Richey Award, which is given annually to the women's college squash player who best exemplifies the ideals of squash in her love of and devotion to the game, her strong sense of fairness, and her excellence of play and leadership. Four Princeton women have won this coveted honor: Demer Holleran (1989), Hope MacKay (1992), Julia Beaver (2001), and Katie Giovinazzo (2012).
