Tigers Battle Back to Salvage ECAC Point in 3-3 Draw at Brown
February 04, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Brown took a three-goal lead in the first period but Princeton battled back to score three straight goals for a 3-3 tie and salvage a point in the ECAC standings. After a 4-2 win over Yale yesterday afternoon, the Tigers earn three points in the league this weekend and are unbeaten in their last three games.
Princeton is now 9-11-3 overall, its most wins since the 2012-13 season. With a 4-9-3 mark in the ECAC, the Tigers currently sit in ninth place and just one point of of eight-place.
Princeton looked unsettled in the first period of its first afternoon game of the season, and Brown (4-17-2, 3-12-1) took advantage, netting three. Tyler Bird scored a short-handed goal at 4:09 after Davey Middleton intercepted a breakout at the blue line. He waited for support and it didn't take long for Bird to get there as he was defending the wing and he rifled a shot from the high slot.
Charlie Corcoran added to the lead less than four minutes later as he caught Colton Phinney out of position as he tended to a Brent Beaudoin shot. Beudoin squeaked by his defender in front of the Princeton bench and whipped a shot towards net that Phinney wasn't able to clamp down on and Corcoran was left all alone on the back door for the tally at 7:34.
Sam Lafferty found Max Willman on the back door for the third goal at 10:37. Nolan Abdel dropped the puck off for Lafferty in the center of the ice and he dished it off to Willman at the left pipe.
Sophomore Ryan Kuffner net his third goal of the weekend and 13th overall at 15:47. Freshman Jackson Cressey won the puck off the right wall and centered the puck for sophomore Max Véronneau who put the puck on the stick of Kuffner at the right post for the score.
Véronneau added a goal of his own as he roofed in a Josh Teves rebound. Teves came skating across the slot and lifted a shot at Gavin Nieto. Veronneau took advantage of the rebound and Nieto being down on his belly to cut it back to a one-goal game at 10:28 of the second.
After having a goal waved off in the first period, junior Matt Nelson made sure this one would count. Skating on the man-advantage, Cressey won a face off to the right of Nieto back to Nelson. Nelson fired a shot from the left wall, a rocket over the shoulder of Nieto at 18:31.
Phinney, who finished with 23 saves, made arguably the save of the game at 11:32 of the third as Princeton killed off its second penalty of the game. He dropped down on a Aibel shot on the left pipe, a rebound off a shot from Middleton.
Princeton held Brown without an even-strength shot in the third and gave up just two power-play shots as they fought to get the go-ahead goal. Nieto stood tall stopping all 10 shots he faced in the third.
The Tigers best chance in overtime was a redirection by freshman Jeremy Germain on a Teves drive with 1:31 remaining but Nieto made his 34th save of the game.
With 44.5 seconds left the Tigers found themselves back on the penalty kill after a hitting from behind call on Cressey and the defense kept things going, not allowing a shot on goal to hang on for the draw.
Princeton was 1 for 3 on the power play while Brown was 0 for 4.
