March 16, 2017 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team departs on an international trip Portugal during the University's spring break. The team is scheduled to leave the U.S. for Lisbon on Saturday, March 19, for a week-long trip that involves sightseeing, community service and competition.
"We are excited to have this unique opportunity to travel to Portugal, experience the rich culture and history, compete against some of the best clubs in Europe, and grow as a team," head coach Jim Barlow. "We are grateful to our alumni and Friends of Princeton Soccer for making this trip possible, and we look forward to a fun and challenging week."
The Tigers will compete in three games, facing SL Benefica on Wednesday, March 22 and SG Sacavenense on Friday, March 24. Benefica is in the top flight of Portugese futbol, Primeira Liga, and is the the most successful Portugese club, having won the last three league titles. Sacavenense is in the National Championship of Seniors, the third best league in Portugal. The third match is against Sporting Lisbon of the Premeira Liga, and is one of the founding members of that league along with Benefica.
Another highlight of the trip will be attending the Portugal vs. Hungary World Cup Qualifier game on Saturday, March 25.
Other adventures include a surf clinic, tuk tuk tour of Lisbon and trips to Sintra, Cabo da Roca, Cascais and Estoril.
